THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

SPEAKER

Community House

Joanne Turner from Community House was our planned speaker.  Unfortunately she was taken ill at the last moment and was unable to attend.
The club had planned a surprise presentation to kick start their fundraising for an extension to their facilities. David Cooney and Tony Gee were there on behalf of the Rotary Cambridge Community Trust to present a cheque for $75,000. In Joanne’s absence Don Harris, a trustee for the Community House Trust, formally received the cheque on its behalf.  Don said he ‘was blown away by the donation’ and briefly described their plans to have the new facility on site early in the new year. The new building would provide a greatly improved environment for both their staff and clients. Community House offer support for people impacted by family violence and drug addiction.
We understand their fundraising target ia about $200,000 and our donation is a big step in that direction.

Great Wall of China

John Bishop spoke to us about the Great Wall of China to fill out the time.  He gave us some history of the building of the Wall and interesting facts about it.  John visited the Wall in 1981.

NOTICES
This Coming Week

This week we will get to hear from the wonderful Keith Rogers as he gives us his life talk. Keith has long been very active in his community and within Rotary (in cities far bigger than the town of Cambridge) and there’s bound to be some interesting stories shared with us on Thursday.

Key Updates

  • The new committees have been listed.  Directors should be emailing committee members directly.

  • Dennis Finn has stepped up to serve as Community Services director.

  • Gavin is wanting someone with computer literacy to take over updating of the FindIt database.  Kay Hanna has resigned from the Club.
Gavin would also like to hear from anyone who can help find advertisers to fill half of page 1 and the inside back cover.

  • Robyn wants the Service Committee to meet immediately prior to this week’s meeting.  She is sending out an email about this.

  • Carey advised that there are 3 charities for the Cambridge Garden Festival – Cambridge Community House, Victim Support and Cambridge Rotary.  MoneyWorks and Amber Nurseries are the tier one sponsors and Roger Hill Laboratories, John McDonald Builders and Powerhouse Real Estate are the tier two sponsors.  There are other tier 3 sponsors. Help will be needed in September-October to talk to other Rotary Clubs and to drop off flyers.  The festival is on Facebook.  The aim is to sell 1000 tickets.

  • John Windle brought a banner from the Chesterfield Rotary Club.

  • Ray advised that the process for handling apologies will change soon.  The new process will be to text or phone a mobile number.  More details soon.

Rotary Friendship Exchange

  • Forthcoming Rotary Friendship Exchanges are to Brazil in April and Alberta in June.  Anyone interested should contact Bill Wilson.

YOUR WEEKLY ROSTER

Please take note of the Duty Roster and be in good time for your duties.

NOTE The new Duty "Magic Moment" is: A short comment referencing something in our community, or within Rotary which you find inspiring, encouraging or adding to the joy and pleasure of life. It should be an uplifting story that takes no more than two minutes to deliver. Ideally it will be something from the last week or so, something others may not yet have heard about.

For example Ray started the year by referencing two inspiring young Kiwi’s honoured, that week, by the Queen for their work in gender equality and mental health. They were Alexia Hilbertidou (aged 19) and Ezekiel Raui (aged 20) who had already made a difference.
