John Tarbutt spoke to the Club on the latest thinking from Rotary International
CREATING A MORE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE FOR ROTARY TOGETHER
Isn’t it interesting how the need for action motivates change? So it is with the proposal intended to promote new ideas of governance that perhaps will meet the needs of Rotary in a way that appeals to a wider group of people.
This subscribes to a more influential and effective group within the communities we serve and, as I see it, provides opportunity to increase membership and promote growth.
That’s got to be the thrust for change.
It’s of concern to all of us when we look at the statistics over the last 10 years and find a 23% drop (nearly 10,000 members) in membership within zone 8 ( Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands).
We can look at our own club which has lost members and we can set our sights towards regaining membership to the benefit of the community we serve in so many ways.
We can make it happen; what we can’t do is wait for it all to happen. We have an opportunity to be at the forefront of change in supporting other clubs who face the challenge of growth and development and have felt it much more than what Rotary Cambridge has experienced.
Support and careful planning will contribute to change not just for us but for other clubs that are our neighbours, both near and far, as part of the intended growth and development Rotary International is wanting to achieve.
The proposal focuses on a new governance approach that recognises the central role of clubs, with support structures including marketing and national partnerships.
Consultation is underway and clubs will vote on the proposal in September 2022. The vote is for Zone 8 (NZ, Aust and PI) to proceed with a pilot exploring a regional approach to governance.
I am sure many of us, if not all, would welcome the proposed change in the best interests of Rotary, not forgetting the fellowship that is inherent in our willingness to serve.
I leave you with the thought that we are well placed to support this action that will, in my view, strengthen our own well-being. Interesting times ahead as we face the challenge.
