THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

SPEAKER

Forum Feedback
This week Ray presented the feedback from our club forum back in April this year along with the results from the survey which ensued. We’ve all been given the challenge of thinking about where our interests best lie (in relation to the 10 challenges Ray has spoken about) and whether we should transfer from one Service Committee to another. Most of us got to consider that on Thursday evening but if you weren’t able to attend then you still have an opportunity to change – just have a word with Ray. For our newer members and the forgetful ones like me, our five Service Committees are Community, Youth, International, Vocational and Club.

STRATEGIC PLAN

Notes From the Board Meeting held on 17th July 2018

Situation Vacant:
With Phil McCreery is on Leave of Absence the club needs to find a new Bar Manager. The person ideally should have:
  • Club license (eg, sports club, RSA, working men's club) allows the sale or supply of alcohol for consumption on the club premises to members of the club, their guests and members of other clubs with reciprocal visiting rights.
If you have a license, or have held one in the past and would like to renew it please discuss this with Robyn Crickett.
Project Directors:
The following directors were allocated to liaise with our various projects. Directors are not expected to run the projects but to provide a clear conduit between the project committees, especially their Chairperson, and the Board. The process is being formalised with a report being available to the Board at each of its meetings.
  1. CambridgeFindIt               - Robyn Crickett
  2. Bookarama                        - Laurie Graham
  3. Charity Dinner and Auction         - Bev Maul-Rogers
  4. Taste Waikato                   - Bev Heron
  5. Garden Festival                 - Roger Hill
  6. Race to Raise Funds         - Ian Grant

Fundraisers:
The Board received detailed analysis from out of last year’s fundraisers. The following is a brief summary from Bookarama.
Financials:        Income             $18,542
                           Expenditure     $  3,059                             Gross Surplus                           $15,483
Grants for services were:
Achievement House                    $5,000                          Use of premises
Cambridge High School            $   500                    Help shifting books
The trading surplus was just $7 short of $10,000.
The group felt the project was still worth while returning $15.5k for use by our community. A new Committee, under Dennis Finn, has been formed to look at how the whole project is run including whether or not it can/should be expanded into other areas such as sports gear (Sportarama) and will submit a new business plan and draft budget to the Board for approval. Other members are Roger Hill, Laurie Graham and two Rotarian partners Deb Robinson and Ann Blewden.

NOTICES

This Coming Week

On Thursday, Community House will be our guest presenter(s). Community House is an organisation we regularly support with our fundraising initiatives. Their services provide outstanding support to people in need within our community including budgeting advice, counselling, support around family violence, drug & alcohol education and a host of other vital services.

Key Updates

  • Carey needs some assistance with contacting the garden clubs around New Zealand to get email addresses, etc. If you can lend an hour to the Garden Festival please get in contact with Carey.

  • Bev H is seeking people to help with the dispatch of Taste Waikato later in the year. David Blewden and Roger Hill have already popped their hands up and a few more helpers will be welcome I am sure.

What’s going on in our town this coming week?
  • Not too much is happening in our gorgeous town this week but it is great weather for catching up with friends or watching a movie at Tivoli Cinema. Starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, Leisure Seeker looks like it will be a great movie to watch. And for those of you who are Witney Houston fans, the movie entitled Witney will be showing from this Thursday onwards.

YOUR WEEKLY ROSTER

Please take note of the Duty Roster and be in good time for your duties.

NOTE The new Duty "Magic Moment" is: A short comment referencing something in our community, or within Rotary which you find inspiring, encouraging or adding to the joy and pleasure of life. It should be an uplifting story that takes no more than two minutes to deliver. Ideally it will be something from the last week or so, something others may not yet have heard about.

For example Ray started the year by referencing two inspiring young Kiwi’s honoured, that week, by the Queen for their work in gender equality and mental health. They were Alexia Hilbertidou (aged 19) and Ezekiel Raui (aged 20) who had already made a difference.

    A BLAST FROM THE PAST
    A Blast from the Past
Rotary, with its motto ‘Service Not Self’ was formed in Cambridge in 1946. W R Garrard was the first president and Carl Duignan secretary. Well known in the community now for student exchanges, youth leadership awards, the wishing well in Te Koutu Domain, community grants and Christmas trees, Cambridge Rotary also started Budget Advice and worked with Lions and Jaycees to raise money for Resthaven. They started the Students’ Transition to the Workplace and with their many good deeds in the community they have encouraged further membership and continued success.
