FROM PRESIDENT JOHN

Week 2 – 14 July 2022
Anne Jagose passed away this week at the age of 90 years. Fondly remembered by those that knew her Anne was the first female president of Cambridge Rotary. Organised, business like she had a great turn of phrase accompanied by a very large slice of Irish humour. Most of her working life had been in health and aged care. She was a prolific traveller, family on three continents and an avid reader and book club member.

The hot topic of meals and their cost has arrived early in my presidency. Last increased in 2019 our caterer Gourmet Delicious is seeking to increase meals approx. 20%. With inflation creeping past 6% and cost of wages, ingredients meat and vegetables on the increase, fixed costs have increased and now being eroded by variables.
The committees had the chance to review last evening and their comments and findings will be taken back to the board. Any changes suggested by the board will come back to the membership before developing an action plan.

The decision to roll over the committees at least in first half of the new Rotary year is paying off particularly when listening to the reporting. All the committees are quickly off the mark capitalizing on good work and planning in previous Rotary year but was interrupted by Covid.

After consultation Dennis Finn has agreed to take on the role of Bulletin Editor. Maurice has done an outstanding job and will continue as a photographer. David Partis and Sean Brady will continue reporting the meeting.
If you have a piece for the Bulletin please give it to Dennis in writing. Cutting and pasting does make the job easier.

Look forward to seeing you at CHS next week

THIS WEEK'S NOTICES

Notes – Thursday 14 July 2022
Sergeant Brian pointed out that today was Bastille Day but had pleasure in announcing that our President was not currently in prison and so could be present.

A welcome was extended by President John and the members stood to remember Ann Jagose and to express their condolences to her family and friends.

The motion to support the formation of a Satellite Club, having been duly circulated, was put, seconded by Gavin Levesque and carried without exception.

The meal cost has been increased to $28.00 but the increase will be carried by the Club where invoices at the old price have already been issued.

Fines were duly extracted by Sergeant Brian after his teaser. “What word of more than 3 letters, starts with an E and ends with an E but only has one letter in it?”

Then followed the first of his stock of stories (edited to avoid copyright issues).

A man walked into a bar and said to the barman, “I’ve just discharged myself from hospital   and am going to celebrate; give me a bottle of champagne, 3 brandys, 6 whiskys, 2 gins and 4 vodkas, please”.
The drinks were served and the man proceeded to down the lot.
“I really shouldn’t be drinking like this with what I’ve got,” he commented.
“Oh yeah”, said the barman, feigning interest, “what yer got?”
            “About $30.”

The Directors gave their reports -

  • Investigating if St Peter’s and CHS have any interest in having a debate to be staged at Rotary, perhaps next year.

  • Plans for 2023 are already well advanced.

A request was made for Directors to send committee notes to Sean for inclusion in the Bulletin.

It was announced that Maurice will continue to provide photographs but will hand over the editorship of the Bulletin to Dennis.

President John closed the meeting with thanks to all for a good attendance.
