President Ray extended a welcome, particularly to the two groups who were to each address the meeting on the proposed Fireworks Project at Karapiro, and visitor Sue Milner.
Fireworks Project debate:
The process for the debate was explained by President Ray. The two groups each had a 15 minute speaking slot (including questions). The groups would retire from the meeting following the debate and the club would vote either for or against the project following the evening meal with a final decision being made by the Rotary Board taking into consideration the voting outcome. Scutineers had been appointed.
Youth Director and proposed project lead, Ian Grant reminded members of the background to the proposed project.
The Animal Welfare Concerns group was represented by Jen Campion, Betty Newcombe, Jenny Hobson and Tom Hobson. Both Tom Hobson and Jen Campion spoke on behalf of the group.
Liz Stolwyk spoke on behalf of Waipa District Council and Mighty River Doman and Mike Pettit on behalf of Waipa District Council.
At the end of the meeting those present took part in a secret ballot with the following result:
In favour of the Fireworks Project: 12
Against the Fireworks Project : 18
