This week our new DG, Graham Jull, presented to the club. The presentation was informative as Graham took us on a journey through the different aspects of Rotary and showed us how they fit together in practical terms. It’s good to see that our district was in the top 3 globally last year for our contribution to Polio Plus, we were helped by a $5M donation by the last government which was spread on a per member basis among all NZ Rotarians. He also complemented us on our individual club health and how well our club is doing.
Graham also shared 3 websites with us that are worth checking out:
And FYI – February next year is spotlight month for Rotary where the emphasis will be on raising the profile of Rotary in our communities.
Thanks
The CHS First X1 Girls team catered our dinner last night and in return received a cheque for $900 which will go towards their Auckland week long competition. We hope they do well!
This Coming Week
Next week we’ll be hearing from Shelley Cambridge from The Cancer Society – as we head into Daffodil Day it will be a great reminder of the work the Cancer Society does and how we can help them.

Please take note of the Duty Roster and be in good time for your duties.
NOTE The new Duty "Magic Moment" is: A short comment referencing something in our community, or within Rotary which you find inspiring, encouraging or adding to the joy and pleasure of life. It should be an uplifting story that takes no more than two minutes to deliver. Ideally it will be something from the last week or so, something others may not yet have heard about.
For example Ray started the year by referencing two inspiring young Kiwi’s honoured, that week, by the Queen for their work in gender equality and mental health. They were Alexia Hilbertidou (aged 19) and Ezekiel Raui (aged 20) who had already made a difference.

As we look ahead toward Rotary’s new Strategic Plan, one thing is very clear: to build the Rotary of the future, we need to be working much harder to develop Rotary leadership for the future. That means engaging a younger generation in Rotary service, and doing more to welcome and encourage service-minded young professionals into the Rotary family.
Fifty years ago, Rotary launched a program designed to do just that: Rotaract. In many ways, Rotaract has been astonishingly successful. Today, we have a quarter of a million Rotaractors, serving in about 10,000 clubs.
Yet as successful as Rotaract has been in its service and its growth, Rotary has largely failed to support Rotaract in becoming the incubator for Rotarians that we hoped it would be. Only 27% of Rotary clubs sponsor a Rotaract club, and only a tiny percentage of the talented and motivated people who serve in Rotaract go on to serve in Rotary. It’s my goal this year to turn all of that around: both by doubling (yes, you read that right—doubling) the number of Rotary club sponsoring Rotaract clubs, and making sure that every Rotaract club is fully embraced by Rotary. I want to approach that work in a strategic way, by building Rotaract clubs that are community based, with young people who are going to stay in the same area where Rotary clubs are already waiting to welcome them.
If you’ve never thought of sponsoring a Rotaract club, we’ve got plenty of great resources to get you started, including our Rotaract Handbook. The most important part of sponsoring a Rotaract club is keeping the connection between Rotaract and Rotary strong. Hold joint meetings, run joint projects, and make Rotaractors welcome at your Rotary meetings. Treat Rotaractors as younger colleagues, and be open to the inspiration, knowledge, and new ideas they can bring to your service. Know the Rotaractors in your Rotaract clubs, keep track of which of them might be ready to join Rotary—and when they’re ready, invite them! Or be open to chartering a new Rotary club that might better suit their needs, and grow a more diverse, more flexible, and stronger Rotary. For more ideas, register for Building New Clubs Together(English only), a webinar that will help you determine when a new club is needed and provide ideas for recruiting charter members and creating a strong leadership team. The webinar will be held on 9 August from 15:00-16:00 Chicago time (UTC-5).
We’ve put together all kinds of resources to help you launch, and support, Rotaract in your community. If you’re ready to get started, click the link below to tell me you’re in—and take the first steps in your Rotaract journey.
Whether you’re with Rotarians, Rotaractors, or in your community, show your Rotary pride. We have a great organization—and we can all Be the Inspiration.
Yours in Rotary, Barry Rassin Rotary International President, 2018-19
Devastating Earthquakes in Indonesia: Please help families today!
I am writing to you today with an update on the situation in Indonesia, where the island of Lombok has been struck with three major earthquakes in the past week.
On Sunday, a 6.9 Magnitude earthquake suddenly struck the island of Lombok in Indonesia killing nearly 100 people. At least 20,000 men, women and children have been left homeless and urgently need shelter.
This devastating quake happened just a week after a magnitude 6.4 earthquake killed 17 people. Early this morning, a third devastating earthquake hit the island destroying buildings that had already been weakened by the previous two earthquakes.
I have prepared a short background report which you may wish to take to your Rotary club, and you can download a copy from here.
A ShelterBox Team is Being Deployed
Today, ShelterBox has confirmed that we're deploying a team to further assess how we can help the most vulnerable families. Our team has been in contact with our Rotary partners on the ground since the first earthquake hit.
We have emergency shelter aid already stored in the area should our assistance be appropriate.
How You Can Help
Any donation you are able to give will help families who have been affected by natural disasters and conflict.
For families who have lost everything and have experienced terrifying disasters, your gift of shelter and supplies provides hope and the ability to start rebuilding.
Thank you so much for your continued support, and for believing that no family should be left without shelter.
