From President David
We had a good turnout on Thursday night for our Committee Meetings night. This was the first time we have managed to get the committees together this Rotary year due to our first month being filled up with some really good speakers and our Apprenticeship Awards night. The teams ran over time but that means there is a lot going on in our Club. Maybe we need to dedicate longer timeslots for the Committee meetings for the evening.
We started the evening with a toast to the Rotary Club of Port Phillip in Melbourne. Apparently our Club used to do this a while ago so we have re-introduced it. It's part of the focus of Rotary Awareness and respecting other Clubs around the world and appreciating that Rotary is a worldwide organisation. Next week Colin Pauling will arrange a toast.
Good to see Marie back with us this week and she joined in on the International Committee meeting. Our Club needs everyone's help to source host families for the remainder of Marie’s stay with us. Please contact Bev Maul-Rogers if you have someone in mind that would be a suitable host family.
Great to see our article in the paper for our Apprenticeship Awards. Thanks to Andrew for putting this together and working with Viv to get this in the Cambridge News.
We have our monthly board meeting on Tuesday evening at the Cambridge High School.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you all next week.
David Partis
New Member - Phil Shakesby
We welcomed Phil Shakesby and his wife Jackie to the meeting, where President David inducted Phil into the club. Phil was introduced via John Bullick. A warm welcome to Phil and we hope he enjoys his time with us.
Speech Contest
On Tuesday 12 September, the annual primary schools speech contest will be held. Rotary Cambridge organises, runs and sponsors this worthwhile event so our young people get an opportunity to showcase their oratory skills and develop confidence in public speaking. The speeches delivered are always informative and entertaining. These 8-12 year old school students are the cream of the speech makers across the Cambridge schools, all vying for the Murray Thompson Memorial Trophy. An invitation is extended to our club members to attend and be wowed by our young contestants.
When: Tuesday 9 September, 6pm.
Where: Cambridge East school hall.
Guest Speaker This Week - Spencer Cleland
The speaker this week, Spencer Cleland, attended this year’s Rotary National Science & Technology Forum as Rotary Cambridge’s nominee. Spencer is a Year 13 student at St Peters. The Forum is aimed at high achieving, well-rounded science, maths and technology students and Spencer met all the criteria extremely well.
He is going to tell us about his experience at the Forum and his exciting career aspirations. Spencer has just returned from the European Space Camp in Norway where he was one of 24 from around the world to be chosen to attend.

Emergency Response Kits
For over 45 years Rotary New Zealand's Emergency Response Kits have been providing immediate relief to our Pacific Island neighbours in times of cyclone, devastating flood, tsunami or earthquake, through the efforts of Rotary volunteers and supporters. Since 2009 some 10,886 kits have been distributed.
The value of each Emergency Response Kit is approximately $600. All donations, whatever the amount, will be used for the Rotary New Zealand ERK programme. If you would like to make a donation please contact David Partis or Bev Maul-Rogers for a copy of the brochure and donation form.
Project Update: Teen Club
Whilst the use of the Junior Club building for the Cambridge Teen Club is still subject to approval from the board of Hautapu Sports Club, planning continues. The opening events have been scheduled for 23 September and 14 October. A Student Management Committee has been formed to help organise and run these (and follow-on) events.
Many thanks to Ian Grant for his support with heat pumps and for helping to build the relationship with the Hautapu Sports Club. A presentation is being made to the Community Board re the Teen Club in support of our grant application for gear needed by the students to utilise the facility.
