Notes – 7 July 2022
Sounding the gong on his debut appearance as Sergeant at Arms, Brian Palmer explained that he would be away for some meetings and that Acting Sergeants would be appointed. He then introduced President John Bishop who was greeted by a standing ovation at his first meeting of the 2022/2023 year.
President John welcomed everyone and asked Ian Grant to welcome our special guest,
Malinda Chandrasekers, a Rotarian from Sri Lanka who now lives in Cambridge and will hopefully decide to join our Club.
After an apology for not bringing the badges, President John thanked all those who contributed to the Changeover Evening, particularly the Bruised Brothers. He also again congratulated Sue and LesleyAnn on their awards.
Andrew Bateman then introduced our Guest Speaker - none other than President John himself, although with a promise of dancing girls to follow.
Receipt of the following awards was celebrated -
- A plaque from Rotary International for our 75th anniversary;
- A Certificate from Cambridge Town Council for 75 years of service to the community;
- A Rotary Citation presented to IPP Ian Grant when he attended the District Changeover;
- The District Environment Award to Mark and David for Urban Miners;
- The District Communication Certificate and Trophy won (again) by the PR Committee.
President John’s inaugural address to the Club confirmed that the committees from last year would continue for the next six months to allow them to complete work which had been interrupted or curtailed because of Covid restrictions. He also drew attention to International President-Elect Jennifer Jones’ logo and maxim for 2022/23 before displaying the Club’s Work Plan and explaining how this would evolve. His philosophy, he said, was to operate from the bottom up rather than the top down.
Treasurer Bev than presented details of the grants made during 2021/22 totalling about $36,000.
Our meal was provided by the Cambridge High School Dance Group who preceded their repast (including puddings!) with excerpts from some of their competition pieces. These short balletic works in different styles, devised and choreographed by the girls themselves, were thoroughly enjoyed by all. This was a fund-raising project by the Dance Group and, with the contents of both the Sunshine and Fines Boxes being included, raised over $1000 for their expenses.
The meeting was closed by President John with thanks again to our guests and the girls and supporters of the Dance Group
