Race to Raise Funds (23 March 2023)
Planning is under way and we have the date confirmed with Cambridge Raceway and 4 races earmarked for us to raise sponsorship for.
More information will come through as we get underway and we may need additional help from the Club.
District Conference 2023 (21-23 April 2023)
Accommodation is filling up fast as Te Kuiti is such a small town. So far Bill Robinson, John Tarbutt and I have booked in to the Waitomo Lodge. There are still rooms available and other accommodation providers around town so if you can please let David Partis know how many would be interested attending he can make some enquiries. Accommodation will go fast as other Clubs have cottoned on to the lack of accommodation. Please contact David Partis for more information or to register your interest.
Below is a summary of Nigel Salter's speech as a member of our Club.
I was born in Durban, the second son of Charles & Joy Salter. Some of the family have been in SA since early 1800’s - Dad’s mum had been interned as a little girl in the Ladysmith POW camp during the Boer War.
I lived in Port Shepstone – attended school there – until conscripted into the army for 9 months. After the army, I moved to Durban to attend the Uni and teamed up with school and army mates.
I was articled to Price Waterhouse. The foreign accountants I worked with helped open my eyes to the reality of racism in South Africa. I was committed to leaving SA when I met Christine in early 1973 – married 8 months later and on the boat to NZ shortly thereafter.
Initially, we were very homesick for family and friends left behind. I worked for Robert Muldoon’s accounting practice as audit manager, then joined Foodstuffs. Like so many youngish Kiwis, the high taxes and high COL encouraged us across the Ditch to Melbourne.
A holiday to Cairns triggered a move to the North, where I worked in the timber and mining industries before starting my own accounting practice. We really enjoyed Cairns. I was involved in a number of community activities – joined Rotary, was on the Trinity Anglican School council for 12 years – three as Chair, treasurer of the Cairns & District Rugby Union amongst others.
After 18 years I sold the practice and went to help in the running of IBIS, a Torres Strait government owned retail group based in Cairns. It was the most rewarding job I have ever had.
I finished my career with Tully Sugar, before retiring to Cambridge after 40 years in far north Qld to be near two of my four granddaughter princesses.
Christmas Parade
This is scheduled for 4 December and we will need a good team to help with that.
Daffodil Day (26 August 2022)
Looking for volunteers on 26-27 August for Daffodil Day fundraising. Contact Nigel Salter.
Finally, a special thanks to the Cambridge High School Hockey code who provided the catering for our dinner.
It was a fantastic meal and we thank the parents and students for a job well done.
As a result they raised in excess of $1,000 to support their activities
and it was a pleasure for President John to present it to them.
