From President David
What a brilliant turnout last Thursday for our farewell night for our IYE student Marie. We welcomed all of our guests for the evening including our host families, our District Governor Bill and wife Deb and the Cambridge High School International Student Director Craig Fuller. Rotarians introduced their partners for the evening and we also welcomed Louise Zakrzewski the IYE student from Te Awamutu Rotary Club who came to share the evening with Marie.
The evening was fantastic and Marie gave us a great account of her year in New Zealand. Marie covered the relationships she had made, the times she shared at respective host families and friends she had made during the year. We gave Marie a gift of a Pounamu necklace as her memento of her year in New Zealand.
The Cambridge High School First XI Hockey team were our caterers for the evening and a great night was had by all.
This will be my last President's note for the Bulletin as we head in to the final week of the year and changeover next Thursday. John Bishop has done a great job of organising the changeover night and I look forward to seeing you all next week as we welcome in our new President and Board for the coming year.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend and see you all next week.
President David
Farewell to Marie Witzel
We said goodbye to Marie Witzel, our IYE student, last Thursday. Marie talked about how much she enjoyed her time with our club, getting to travel to many places around New Zealand and particularly thanked her host families for their support and hospitality. She highlighted the friends she had made, as well as the Rotary weekends away to places such as Taupō, Rotorua and Waitomo. A highlight was her South Island trip and she enjoyed many other experiences such as surfing, fishing, visiting our beaches and the school ball.
Many thanks to Marie's host families - the Devoys, Leathams and McCulloughs - and to LesleyAnn Thomas for her significant contribution in supporting Marie to ensure she had a great experience while she was with us.
We wish Marie all the very best and look forward to keeping in touch.
Rotary Toast - Rotary Club of Belfast No. 67
Chris Smiley introduced the Rotary Club of Belfast No. 67. This club began in 1911 and is still going strong. Many different projects are supported including Christmas Appeals, Community Awards, ShelterBox and environmental challenges. Chris' connection with the club is that Belfast was his old hometown 52 years ago! He is very proud of the club because in 1969 when the'' troubles ''were raging and street violence and clashes were commonplace, they showed considerable kindness and a very generous spirit.
Chris told the story of when he was a fourth-year medical student and, with four others, planned to deliver a utility ambulance to a Christian Hospital in West Pakistan 5,200 miles away. Rotary ran raffles and collected money from businesses in the city and even Queens University supported the idea and donated money from a scholarship. The driving took five weeks and was eventually delivered safely.
