Guest Speaker - Chris Prouse
Chris was Chief Engineer for Radio Hauraki from August 1968 until March 1981. A former Rotarian and a recipient of the Paul Harris Award, he was a foundation member of the Rotary Whakatane Sunrise Club before moving to Cambridge.
In 1968 Chris joined Radio Hauraki's "pirate" endeavour where he worked on board MV Kapuni (Tiri II). The pirate station broadcast offshore from 1964 until 1970.
Major highlights of his young broadcasting career were working on the Warrant Application to the Broadcasting Tribunal of NZ, the subsequent success in being awarded the first private broadcast licence in NZ for over 30 years, and then being given technical responsibility for building Radio Hauraki 1XA 1480AM as a legal land-based radio station.
Another career achievement was his involvement in the establishment of NZ's first FM station, 91FM.
One of the lessons that Radio Hauraki taught Chris was that we do not have to accept things as they are. If we feel passionately about something and act on it, we can make changes.

Club Fundraiser for Child Cancer
Next Thursday (8 September) we will be celebrating ‘WIG WEDNESDAY’ to raise funds for children with cancer. It's Committee Evening so no need to worry about being seen wearing:
- An outlandish wig
- Your wife’s wig; or even
- Your lover’s wig (who’s to know?)
There may be a prize for the team with the most/best/colourful wigs.
But be sure to wear a wig and make a donation or expect to be fined. Either way it's for a good cause.

Dry July
Bill Wilson advised that this initiative attracted 7,300 participants and raised $1.2 million to improve the comfort and wellbeing of people affected by cancer. That's a great effort!
